DIY Straw Flower Hat

With spring approaching a new straw hat is what everyone needs. And with a few markers you can personalize the hat and add just the right amount of flair.

Hello Everyone!

It has been a while since I did a Dollar Store project and an accessory project, so I thought I would combine the 2 into 1 project.

I have a terrible case of Spring Fever and when I saw these cute straw hats at the Dollar Store I knew I had to get one and decorate it.

The project is simple enough and can be completed in under an hour.

Materials:

Straw Hat (I found mine at the Dollar Store)
Sharpies (You can find some here: Sharpies)

Instructions:

Find a super cute straw hat that you are willing to draw on.

I didn’t want to spend a ton of money, so I thought a dollar was perfect. I also wanted to make this an easy project that could be completed quickly. And I accomplished that as well.

Find a design that you want to draw and go to town. I thought pretty pink flowers were perfect for spring.

Straw is a little harder to work on, but not impossible, just take your time and you will be fine. Pick a design that doesn’t have a lot of detail or it will get muddy on the hat.

This would be a great project with a group or for a girls weekend or with kids.

Button Magnets. Vintage buttons glued on a magnet make a really cute gift.
Wood Burn Coaster. This gift is fun to personalize with initials or something they like. Just burn in the design, seal it and add felt and you have a gift that will be treasured.
Gift Bag Art. There are a lot of wonderful gift bags at the Dollar Store. Just cut to size and frame and you have a gift that can fit almost any occasion
Vases. Empty jars and beverage containers make wonderful gifts when they are all decorated with raffia, jute, flowers, and rhinestones.
Christmas Mason Jars. These jars are a very versatile gift just by changing out the flower on top, add candy to the jar and you are good to go.
Agate Coasters. These coasters are a beautiful addition to any home and are super easy. Just paint on the edge with a paint pen and add felt the bottom.

Santa Mixed Media Canvas

Santa Mixed Media Canvas

Christmas is almost here, and this Santa mixed media canvas is perfect for your holiday decor.

Hello Everyone!

Lately I have been inspired to make mixed media canvases, and with Christmas fast approaching I have the perfect subject for my art.

I had this beautiful paper and glittery star that became the focal point, the rest was just details.

Now I will be honest, I didn’t take any pictures of me actually doing the mixed media, but I think I can explain well enough and as always please ask if you have questions.

I really enjoy making mixed media canvases, all inspired by Finnabair.

Materials:

12x 12 canvas (I got mine at Michaels, but you can always get one on Amazon here: Canvas)
Paper (I don’t remember where I got this beautiful paper by KaiserCraft, St Nicholas Collection, Papa Noel, but you can find great paper just about anywhere)
Large star (I found mine at the Dollar Store. It was just so beautiful that I couldn’t pass it up. )
Large letter, glitter, beads, and other do-dads, stickles, acrylic paint, stencil
Mod Podge, modeling paste, Mica Powder, clear gesso, clear spray sealer

Instructions:

Trim your paper to fit your canvas and spread Mod Podge on the canvas. Place your paper on the canvas, smooth out. I turned my canvas over and let it dry overnight.

The next day I covered my paper with clear gesso to give it some tooth. Then I applied modeling paste with a swirl stencil to add some detail (you can’t really see it, but it is there.)

Then I sprinkled on mica powered and spread it around. (I am in love with these Prima Marketing mica Powders. You can find the colors I used here: Gold, Copper, Pale Silver)

Once that was all dry I went to town. I added modeling paste to the star and glued it to the center.

I highlighted the stencil with painted and I painted around the edges with a shimmery white color.

Then I added the letters (they were pink, but I painted them and added glitter)

I added the large gems and small beads and micro beads with globs of modeling paste. Then I poured on lots of glitter to stick the the modeling paste (I figured that Christmas decor needs a lot of glitter)

I added rows of pearl beads, and key metal elements, and I added stick details to the star. Once everything is dry I sprayed it with a clear sealer, the mica powder is not adhered to anything and it will wipe away, so the sealer is necessary.

I really like how this turned out. I think it is an interesting piece.

Organization- Adding Metal Strips for easy organization

Hello Everyone! In any craft room organization is key. It is important to know what you have, and where it is so you can complete your projects easily with minimal headache. These metal strips will help you achieve your craft room organization goals.

I don’t know about you, but I have all these little odds and ends that are all over my crafting area. I use them all the time, but I didn’t have a good way to store them I wanted them close by, but out of the way. I know, that sounds like a contradictions in terms, lol. My strips are on the wall right above my work table. Perfect reaching distance.

This is such an easy project, just grab some metal strips from the hardware store.

Drill holes so you can attach it to the wall. Secure the strips to the wall.

The little clear plastic tubs I found at the dollar store (you can see it online here) Just add a magnet to the lid and you are good to go. Just make sure the glue dries overnight before hanging it full of stuff.

The metal tubs I also found at the dollar store (here) They are great! With a clear lid and lots of space they are perfect for your metal strip. Just make sure the paper sticker of off the magnet, it will attached better without the sticker.

I added magnets to some of my other odds and ends like wire and micro beads.

Now I have everything on hand, but it is out of the way.

I think this is a great solution for all these little bits and pieces. Now it is time to add some more strips for the rest of my do-dads.

DIY Ornaments from Magic Towels!

Hello Everyone! With the holidays right around the corner it is time to start thinking about decorating. And since we are on a crafting blog, this post is about DIY Ornaments. This is an easy project that takes magic towels and turns them into ornaments and it is fun to do with the kids.

I hope you had a wonderful relaxing Thanksgiving holiday. We had a great time, we went to Florida for the week and it was perfect. Stay tuned, I will do a travel journal about the resort we stayed at.

With Christmas right around the corner I thought I would start doing some holiday crafts and today’s is a DIY ornament.

Materials for your DIY Ornaments:

Magic Towels (I used a Dory one and an Avengers one, and I got both from the dollar store)

We start with a simple magic towel.

Ribbon
Stuffing
Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Instructions:

Cut around the shape that you want to make into an ornament. And cut out that same shape in a plain colored wash cloth.

Next, we cut out the parts we want to turn into ornaments.

Then you start gluing. Glue the pom-pom ribbon ) around the edge and then glue the black ribbon to the top. I used hot glue for all my gluing, but if you are doing this with kids then you might wan to use fabric glue. You can also sew these together, but me and my sewing machine are not getting along right now, so my hot glue gun came to the rescue.

Then glue the plain wash cloth to the back, but make sure you leave a little gap so you can add stuffing. Add a little stuffing and glue the gap closed.

Then, add ribbon and glue together.

And that is it. These are great for kids and easy to do. Kids will like having their favorite characters on the tree.

How to make anything look old and rusty

Hello Everyone!

I have finished the third angel that I was working on. This time I made it look old and rusty, like the angel had been out in the weather for many years

I really liked how this turned out. It was a lot of fun and I can’t wait to make more things look old and rusty.

Materials

Figurine (I used a resin angel from the dollar store)
Paint (you can get rust paint from the craft store, but the colors I used was orange. brown, and yellow

Coffee and Cinnamon and mod podge

Instructions:

First paint the angel with black gesso, Cover everything, this makes a good base for the paint to adhere to.

After the gesso is dry sponge on some yellow paint. I used a chalk paint. The idea here is to not be too perfect, because rust is not perfect at all, haha.

Then sponge on orange and then brown. I went from light colors to dark on top. Emphasize some areas more than others.

Now it is time for the really fun part. Mix up some ground up coffee and some cinnamon. sponge on mod podge on the angel in a random fashion, emphasizing some ares more than others and pour on the cinnamon/coffee mixture. Your crafting area will smell pretty awesome. Let it dry and then gently brush off the excess. This is what makes it look really rusted! It is pretty cool. Then spray a matte sealer to keep the coffee/cinnamon on and then you are done! Add to your decor and you now have a custom piece.

DIY Leaf Bowl From Dollar Store Leaves

Hello Everyone!

Today I have an easy DIY using leaves from the Dollar Store to make a really cute bowl.

I have seen this DIY about 847 times on Pinterest, but I thought that I would add my version to the mix. lol. You can follow me on Pinterest and see all the craziness that I pin. It is so quick and easy, the longest part is waiting for it to dry…

Materials:

Leaves
Mod Podge, foam brush, cling wrap
Bowl

Instructions:

Find a bowl that you can use for the mold. We have had this bowl for over 20 years, in fact Dear Hubby had it when we got married. When I first saw it I mentioned to him that it was a great bowl (it is one in a set of 3) and he said “Thanks, I got it at Ace Hardware when I was getting some tools.” lol. Such a man thing to do. Anyway, the bowls are awesome and have held up great! So I thought it would be a perfect mold. I think I should use the other 2 bowls and make a set of 3 leaf bowls, that would be so cute!

Next wrap cling wrap to the bowl to protect it

Then start adding mod podge and leaves. I used glossy mod podge because that is what I had, but mat would work great as well. Make sure everything is well covered.

Once everything is covered add some cling wrap to the top to help keep everything in place as is dries. It does take a while to dry, but eventually it will dry

Once it is completely dry slowly, and carefully peal off the cling wrap. And there you go a brand new leaf bowl that is perfect for Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Fall. It is a little fragile and not the sturdiest bowl, but it is perfect for candy or pine cones or pumpkins, any light weight decor is perfect.

DIY Skeleton Jewelry and Hair Clips

Hello Everyone!

Another day in Oct and another Halloween Craft. This time it is some DIY jewelry. This is perfect for people who want to celebrate Halloween without going for the full blown costume. You can wear this at work or school without going over the top and it is easy to take off if needed.

This is an easy project that looks so cute when you are done. First find some plastic Skeleton Garland. I found mine at the Dollar Store.

Then take it apart. I used different piece for different types jewelry and hair clips.

I used the arms and legs from 1 skeleton to make hair clips. Just cut off the arms and legs and hot glue them to an alligator clip.

For the bracelet cut off some arms and legs, then punch a hole near the top. I used a needle punch, then I added jump rings to connect the pieces. Add a clasp and you are done.

I make a pair of skull earrings by adding jump rings and a french hook. Easy to do, and so cute when completed.

For the necklace I just added a jump ring to the top of a whole skeleton. I also made a necklace out of just the head.

I also made a hair clip out of a whole skeleton. This one was fun to wear.

The skeletons made great jewelry and hair clips, they were fun to take apart and reassemble in new ways. And since they are light weight they are easy to wear for long periods of time. These are great for almost anyone to celebrate Halloween or for anytime when they want to wear skulls and skeletons.

DIY Halloween Erasers

One of the best ways to spruce up your desk is to add some custom DIY erasers. They are so easy to do and they look so cute on your desk at work or school. They also make perfect gifts, or they would be tons of fun to make at a party.

Materials:

Eraser Clay (I found this one on line at Amazon, but there are different brands, so pick one that works for you)

Molds (I used ice cube trays from the Dollar Store, or you can free form your designs)

Instructions:

The first thing you do is knead your clay. You want to warm it up and make it pliable and easy to work with.

Once the clay is easy to work with then press it into a mold you like. ( I used a mold because shaping things out of clay is not the easiest thing for me. Molds just made the process a lot easier) You can make almost anything out of the clay. It is really easy to work with.

Once you have your design pop it out of the mold. I just put a little on the bottom of the mold then I popped it out and added a layer on the bottom of the design to smooth out the bottom. You can also add enough clay to fill the whole mold. It does make a larger eraser, but it looks really cool. You can layer colors or mix them to make a new color. There are so many possibilites.

Bake the erasers according to the directions and let them fully cool before using.

They actually work. When I first got this product I thought they might be a little gimmicky and not work well, but I was pleasantly mistaken they actually work really well!

DIY Faux Stone Pumpkins

Hello Everyone!

I hope your October is going well! I can’t believe how fast it is flying by! In fact the whole year is going too fast.

To celebrate everything pumpkin I made this easy, diy faux stone pumpkins.

Materials:

Pumpkins ( I used ceramic ones from the dollar store, but almost any pumpkin will work)
Spray Paint Primer
Rust-oleum stone spray paint

Instructions:

After cleaning your pumpkin and protecting your work surface spray a coat of primer on all the pumpkins on all sides

Now it is time to paint. Have you seen this faux stone spray paint? It is awesome! I have a feeling that everything will become faux stone. The texture and look changes the closed you get to your project. It is a versatile tool that I have a feeling I will be using a lot in the future.

For 1 pumpkin I wanted to to use the darker color so I sprayed a base of oil rubbed bronze before the stone.

Then go to town painting the pumpkins. I did add a layer of the lighter color to the darker pumpkin because it was not matching well. But just keep going and paint layers according to the directions until you are happy with the results. I am thrilled with how they turned out! So very cute

If you want you can spray a sealer over the top to protect them. I think these would look really cute outside as part of your outdoor decorations. Just be sure to protect them first.
