Christmas Tree Fabric Mixed Media

Hello Everyone!

Christmas is fast approaching and now is the perfect time to make some new Christmas decor!

I found this chipboard tree at my local creative reuse center and I knew it would be perfect for a fabric mixed media project. It is a Paper Studio brand, I think you can find similar items at your local craft stores.

The first layer is paint. I wanted to make sure the tree was green just in case the fabric didn’t cover it all. Then  I added the fabric layer. This added a lot of texture and interest.

Once the fabric was dry it was time to start painting. I have found that these fabric mixed media projects work best if you let the fabric dry overnight rather than using a heat tool.

Once the fabric is dry it is time to add paint. I dry brushed on a few of the Finnabair Metallique and Sparks paint. Then I added the decorations. I used items I found at the Dollar Store and adhered them with hot glue.

Once that was all dry I flicked paint on with a toothbrush. I love how it turned out! This was a lot of fun to create and it will look great in my home. What decor projects are you working on?

WDW Park Icons Canvas- Mixed Media

Hello Everyone!

It is no secret how much I love Disney and visiting Disney World is one of my favorite things to do! When I began my journey into fabric mixed media I just knew that I would need to create some canvases that paid homage to Disney World.

So I created these 4 canvases celebrating each of the 4 parks at WDW.

The first is a pretty pink castle, this is for the Magic Kingdom. It is hard to tell in the photo but there is a lot of glitter and shine on the canvas, especially on the white background.

WDW Park Icons

Then there is EPCOT with an image of Spaceship Earth. This is one of my favorite rides, probably because it is slow and relaxing with lots of air conditioning, lol. Perfect break in the middle of a hot day in Florida, lol

WDW Park Icons

Then we have MGM, no I am sorry Hollywood Studios, lol. I think I will always call it MGM. And I loved the giant sorcerer’s hat that was in the middle of the park for the longest time. I know they removed the hat, but I loved it so much and that reminds me the most of the park, so I thought I would use the hat to depict MGM.

WDW Park Icons

Last but not least is the Animal Kingdom. I love going to this newer park and I have to say the new Avatar section is amazing!

WDW Park Icons

Overall these were so much fun to create and reminisce about going to Disney and I am eager to start my next canvas!

Silhouette Aladdin Art Journal Page

Hello Everyone!

“You ain’t never had a friend like me!” That is exactly what I thought when I got the most recent Sisterhood of the Traveling Art journal in! The theme is friends and that song just popped into my head from Disney’s Aladdin.

I wanted to create a silhouette of Agrabah and have a sunset or sunrise behind the city.

aladdin art journal

In order to create some dimension and detail I added stars with a stencil and modeling paste before painting with acrylic paint.

aladdin art journal

I did trace the city from a cut out I had (this is because there was no way I could free hand the city, lol) then I painted it back.

aladdin art journal

For the final finishing touch I added rhinestones and blue pearls for additional dimension and interest.

aladdin art journal

I really love how this turned out! For me this was a fun take on the Friends theme, and I think I explore it more in my own journals.

DIY Dollar Tree Ornaments

Hello Everyone!

I know it seems early, but Christmas is right around the corner. I created these ornaments using goodies from the Dollar Tree.

FYI: I was compensated for this post. This post also contains affiliate links and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links.

This was such a fun project to complete.  I had a lot of ornaments and Dollar Tree goodies in my stash for this project, but they have a lot of the same ornaments year after year, along with some new ones.

I love how glittery the Dollar Tree Christmas items are, they make the perfect decorations.

diy ornament

For this project grab a tiny canvas and paint it in any color you want, I used a silver and a gold.  (if you don’t have a canvas a piece of study cardboard or foam board will work)

I saw it on DollarTree

Once the paint is dry you can start layering your ornaments. I used hot glue to attach it.  I used 3 ornaments on each canvas to create an interesting look.

Just build your layers until you get what you are looking for and you are done! Add a string or ribbon to the back if needed.

This project is great to make unique ornaments for your tree, or you can use them as gift tags or gifts to just about anyone on your list.

Girl With Flowers Art Journal Page

Hello Everyone!

I found this really great page, it was the cover of some music sheets. When I saw here I knew that she would be beautiful in my art journal with flowers in her hair.

I love the soft look of the girl so I knew that I didn’t want to add to much to the page.

I started with a shaped paper for the background, I had it in my stash, but you could easily make one by cutting a piece of brown paper into any shape you want.

girl with flowers

I added the girl and some strips of music. Then I used gelatos to add some color and dimension to the page.

girl with flowers

Once I had all the flat elements down I started to add some flowers I had in my stash. I hot glued on a variety of pink and white flowers.

girl with flowers

I really like how she turned out when I was finished. It was really fun to create a simpler page than what I have been creating lately. I wanted the girl to stand out and speak for herself and I think that is what I got.

Fabric Sun Mixed Media

Hello Everyone!

Have you ever found something at a thrift store that you knew you could make into something new? That is how I felt when I saw a sun shaped mirror, in my mind I saw it as a fabric sun mixed media project. I had the perfect fabric and element to put on it!

I had the perfect fabric in reds and yellows to use as the base. I love how the fabric gives the piece texture and movement.

Sun mixed Media

Once the fabric was dry I was able to layer on more goodies. I wanted to keep my composition centered and build from there, but I did add some elements to the edges just to keep it interesting.

Sun mixed Media

To top it all off I used my favorite Finnabair paints and waxes. I just love how her products add shine and interest to my projects. They are always the perfect touch for any mixed media project I do.

Mermaid Art Journal Page

Hello Everyone!

There is just some thing about mermaids, they are so wonderful and amazing. And yes, I think they are real, lol.  And since they are real I wanted to create a fun and easy art journal page using a metal die that I had in my stash.

This page was a lot of fun to create. I really enjoyed digging in my stash and finding old supplies that I haven’t used in a long time.

I did find this really great vellum paper from Stampin Up. It is really old, over 10 years is my guess, but it still works and looked really great on my page. (btw I am not a Stampin Up rep, lol, but I do have one. If you need a rep I did link my rep’s in at the bottom of this page. )

mermaid journal page

I also had a lot of fun using washi tape to create the underwater scene I was going for. I added a little texture with some stone effects from Finnabair and some netting from the Dollar Tree, together they brought the page together for the look I was going for.

mermaid journal page

It is a lot of fun going through your stash and finding things you forgot you had and putting them to use.  What have you found in you stash that you purchased a long time ago that you recently found and are now using?

I am not a Stampin Up Rep, but I do have one. If you need a rep my friend is really good. Here is her website: Stampin Wright

Blue Fabric Mixed Media Frame

Hello Everyone!

Have you ever finished a project and thought  you were done only to realize that you weren’t? Well that is exactly what happened to me with this Blue Mixed Media Fabric Frame.

A little while ago I created the fabric frame and I thought it was pretty cute as is. If you missed that blog post you can catch it here: Fabric Frame

And the original frame was really cute and I did love it, but as I thought about it I thought it needed more. And by more, I mean a lot, lol. So I embellished it, and painted it some more. I love how it turned out and it is a personal choice how much or how little you add to your frame.

Fabric Frame

As you can see the original just has fabric and paint, but the embellished one has flowers, pearls, metal elements, and more added to the frame.

Fabric Frame

I clustered 2 groupings on opposite corners of the frame. I added a variety of elements to create interest and texture to the frame. If you know what photo you will be putting in the frame you can tailor the elements to the photo, I think that would look amazing.

Fabric Frame

After the gesso was all dry I painted over everything with Finnabari Sparks and Metallique paints. They were the same colors as the original frame and I thought that would help make it all cohesive.

Fabric Frame

The last step was adding splashes all over to really blend the original and the new elements together. I wanted it to look like I planned it all at once, lol.

Fabric Frame

I really like how this all came together. I love adding new elements on top of project I thought I had finished.

What project did you think you finished but went back later to add embellishments to? Share in the comments.

Zipper and Buttons Art Journal Page

Hello Everyone!

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Art Journal strikes again, lol. New month, new theme! This month’s journal’s theme is sewing and I love it. There is a wonderful quote at the beginning of the books that states “My soul is fed by needle and thread.” and I just love that quote. The previous pages are wonderful and a huge inspiration for me.

I decided to take my page in a little different direction and create a page around buttons bursting out of a zipper.

I have done this technique in the past on a bottle, but not a journal page.  I did a blog post using a Mason Jar and sea shells, I think it turned out really cute, lol. You can see that post  by clicking here — Sea Shell Mason Jar.

Zipper Art Journal Page

This was such a fun page to create! I added texture, paint, stamps, and other interest to the background. I played with my Dylustions paint for the background, I just love the way that paint applies.

Then I added the zipper, buttons, and butterflies to the page.  Then I painted everything with Finnabair waxes to create the aged look I was going for.

Zipper Art Journal Page

The only problem is that techniques like this can make your journal really bulky, lol. But I love when that happens because it just means that I am using my journal even more and doing even more creating! The bigger the better, lol.

Zipper Art Journal Page

I have to say I am still really loving my art journal group! I love working on different pages and trying new things. I can’t wait to see what next month will bring!

Also, don’t forget to check my events page to see when and where I am teaching, I would love to have you join me in my class!

Ancestor Tribute Art Journal Page

Hello Everyone!

Recently I created another art journal page for the Sisterhood of the Traveling Art Journal! (This is the traveling art journal that I am a part of) If you have missed the explanation of the art journal  series you can see that post here- Sisterhood of the Traveling Art Journal.

The theme of this journal is cemeteries. This is a new theme for me, and I love expanding my creativity and seeing what I can do with a new theme. Rather than do a cemetery as a place I decided to a ancestor tribute art journal page to my Great Aunt Naomi who passed away in March. This seemed like the most appropriate way for me to express a cemetery.

For this journal page I wanted to be a little more subtle that I usually am. I know, big shock right, lol. I usually put everything including the kitchen sink on my journal pages, but this time I wanted to do a less is more theme.

ancestor art journal

I used her high school graduation picture and used that as my focal point (don’t use originals, this is just a print from Wal Mart). Once I knew my focal point the rest was easy to build upon.

I used lace, washi tape, Tim Holtz stickers and quotes, ripped book pages, Prima Marketing oil pastels, and Lindy’s Sprays.

ancestor art journal

I loved challenging myself by creating a simpler page. I love how it turned out and I think this is a perfect tribute to one of my favorite people on the planet.

ancestor art journal

This page has inspired me to create some additional pages that are in the simpler side, pages that showcase a photo and use a small amount of products rather than create a page that uses everything in my stash, lol. I am looking forward to the next page I create.

What do you do to get out of your comfort zone when creating?
