DIY Halloween Erasers

One of the best ways to spruce up your desk is to add some custom DIY erasers. They are so easy to do and they look so cute on your desk at work or school. They also make perfect gifts, or they would be tons of fun to make at a party.

Materials:

Eraser Clay (I found this one on line at Amazon, but there are different brands, so pick one that works for you)

Molds (I used ice cube trays from the Dollar Store, or you can free form your designs)

Instructions:

The first thing you do is knead your clay. You want to warm it up and make it pliable and easy to work with.

Once the clay is easy to work with then press it into a mold you like. ( I used a mold because shaping things out of clay is not the easiest thing for me. Molds just made the process a lot easier) You can make almost anything out of the clay. It is really easy to work with.

Once you have your design pop it out of the mold. I just put a little on the bottom of the mold then I popped it out and added a layer on the bottom of the design to smooth out the bottom. You can also add enough clay to fill the whole mold. It does make a larger eraser, but it looks really cool. You can layer colors or mix them to make a new color. There are so many possibilites.

Bake the erasers according to the directions and let them fully cool before using.

They actually work. When I first got this product I thought they might be a little gimmicky and not work well, but I was pleasantly mistaken they actually work really well!

DIY Faux Stone Pumpkins

Hello Everyone!

I hope your October is going well! I can’t believe how fast it is flying by! In fact the whole year is going too fast.

To celebrate everything pumpkin I made this easy, diy faux stone pumpkins.

Materials:

Pumpkins ( I used ceramic ones from the dollar store, but almost any pumpkin will work)
Spray Paint Primer
Rust-oleum stone spray paint

Instructions:

After cleaning your pumpkin and protecting your work surface spray a coat of primer on all the pumpkins on all sides

Now it is time to paint. Have you seen this faux stone spray paint? It is awesome! I have a feeling that everything will become faux stone. The texture and look changes the closed you get to your project. It is a versatile tool that I have a feeling I will be using a lot in the future.

For 1 pumpkin I wanted to to use the darker color so I sprayed a base of oil rubbed bronze before the stone.

Then go to town painting the pumpkins. I did add a layer of the lighter color to the darker pumpkin because it was not matching well. But just keep going and paint layers according to the directions until you are happy with the results. I am thrilled with how they turned out! So very cute

If you want you can spray a sealer over the top to protect them. I think these would look really cute outside as part of your outdoor decorations. Just be sure to protect them first.

DIY Painted Halloween Village

Hello Everyone!

Halloween is fast approaching, and of course I get it in my head that I want to do some new Halloween decor. At least this year I am getting it done before Halloween and not after, haha.

I saw a Halloween Village at the Dollar Store and thought it would be perfect to paint for Halloween

Materials:

Ceramic houses (I found mine at the Dollar Store, but there are a lot of options out there. You could even use Christmas houses)
Metallic Paint
Gesso
Brushes, Stucco, Beads

Instructions:

When I saw these houses I thought that they were very cute, but the colors were not great. I didn’t think that they went together very well and the figurines were terrible.

Before the painting fun I had to prep the houses. I cleaned them then added a layer of Stucco to the roofs and anywhere there needed to be a rough detail. Then I added some beads to the grass area.

After the texture was dry I added a layer of black gesso. This gave me a blank canvas to work on. I did have to go back and touch up areas that I missed.

After the gesso was dry it was time for the fun painting! I used metallic acrylic paint and I mixed some Mica Powder with soft gloss gel for the green. I just dry brushed the colors onto the housed, adding and blending as I went. Once I was happy with the look I went on to the next house, until I was finished with the project.

Here is an up close picture of the detail of one of the houses and the bridge.

And here it is on display in my home. I really liked this project, it was fun to watch the housed change right before my eyes. Good thing I bought more houses from the Dollar Store, now I can create even more villages, haha

Dragon Mixed Media Canvas

Hello Everyone!

I am loving mixed media! It is quickly becoming one of my favorite forms of crafting. I love finding objects and combining them to create art.
This project is a Finnabair inspired mixed media. She is wonderful and her projects inspire me to create new things and expand my horizon. And I find that the more mixed media projects I do the better they turn out. It is fun to see how different my techniques is since I started.

This time I did a Dragon themed collage. I found the really cute ceramic dragon and built the piece around that. Here is how I made this collage.

Materials:

Canvas
Found objects, papers, rhinestones, microbeads, stencils
Papers, stencils
Soft Gloss Gel, 3D Gel, Mica Powders, paint brushes, gesso

Instructions:

I had these really great old papers and doilies that I used as a base. The papers are a little fragile, but they make and interesting base.

I glued the papers down with soft gloss gel and I added a top coat of soft gloss gel to protect the paper. The fragile, old papers did end up bubbling a tiny bit, but I think that adds to the character of the piece. The papers were just really thin and the gel soaked through and caused tiny wrinkles. Let it dry before going on.

Next start arranging a layer on the canvas. I used a plastic heart and some lace and cork at this stage. I also used a stencil in the corners and added micro beads to the wet paste to add texture and interest.

Keep adding layers to create interest and details.

Once I was happy with the arrangement I used black gesso on the collage in the middle and I edged the canvas in black gesso. I faded the gesso out from the center to blend into the canvas.

Next I started painiting. I added mica poswers to water to make a mist that I srayed in areas. But mostly I dry brushed the paint on the canvas. I mixed mica powders with soft gloss gel to create a paint.

Just dry brush paint all around, hightlighting high points and emphasing different points of interest.

Hello Everyone!

I am back! Thank you all so much for your patience with my long absence. It was never my intention to go silent for a month! I was trying to upgrade my blog to better serve you and in the process I broke it. In fact, it was so bad that tech support was baffled. They had no idea what I did and how they could fix it! (even my mom agreed that it is something that would only happen to me, haha) Anyway I am back online, and over the course of the next few weeks I will be working on cleaning up the blog and making it more used friendly. But for now I am back and I will be posting new projects weekly. I have a ton of ideas for Fall and Halloween so be on the look out of those projects in October.

Let’s get into the latest project. I did another mixed media angel. I showed you how to make a mixed media angel that was black and gold. You can see it again here.

For this angel I went with lighter colors and I like the way it turned out.

Materials:

Angel
White Gesso, soft gloss gel, Mica Powder, brushes
Ribbon, roses, wire and other embellishments

Instructions:

~ Make sure the angel is clean and dry, then add a layer or 2 of gesso to get a good base for painting.

~ Start to add embellishments. Just like the previous angel I mixed micro bead with soft gloss gel for texture on the wings. Then I added ribbon for the dress, I just adhered it with 3D paste. Then I added some roses for interest and a wire halo and then I was done with the texture for the angel.

~ Once she was dry I added more gesso. I added a few layers to make sure she was all covered and ready for the paint.

~ Now time for the fun part, adding paint! I mixed Soft Gloss Gel with Mica Powders to make my own paint and then I applied it to the angel. I did some dry brushing and some heavier paining. I just kept at it until I was done.

When I was happy with the final result I added a clear protective coat of spray paint. Then I let her dry and now she is ready to be displayed. I am having a blast with these mixed media projects! What should I do next?

Re-purpose an old window into a shabby chic message board

If you follow my Instagram (taketimetocreate) then I am sure you have already seen the reveal of this repurposed window. For those of you who don’t follow me there here the shabby chic message board!

I have to say I do love the way it turned out! This all started when my friend asked me to paint a window for a silent auction for mental health awareness. At first I wasn’t too interested, not because I didn’t believe in the cause (because this is one cause I totally support) it was because I wasn’t sure I had a design that would work. Most everyone else did a more traditional painted window with flowers on the glass and things like that. Well of course I didn’t follow the crowd. So I did my own thing and hopefully it will bring in a lot of money for the charity!

Here is how I did the repurposing.

Materials:
~ old window (for this to work you for magnets you will need one with a metal screen)
~ sandpaper, tape, cleaning supplies
~ paint and brush
~ cork
~ flowers, magnets, tacks, and clothes pins
~ ribbon and burlap

Instructions:
~ The first thing you will need to do is sand down all the rough edges and smooth it out. Once you like the feel of the window then give it a good cleaning.

~ Now you are ready to paint. I taped around the edges to help cut down on how much paint went on the screen, and this seemed to help.
Paint a couple coats until you get it to how you like it. I used this white acrylic paint that I had on hand.

~ Cut your cork down to size and glue it on to the screen. I just glued the edges with a metal glue and that seems to hold it pretty well.

~Then I went to work decorating the edge. Shabby chic is all about layers so that is what I did. I put down a layer of burlap, the layered on a layer of crochet ribbon that I had in my stash.

That looked good, but I felt like it was missing something, so I added a ribbon on top and flowers in the corners.

Then I added ribbon to the bottom of the screen and to the bottom of the window. Once that was done it was time to add the flower decorations.

~ For the flowers add a magnet the back of some and tack to the others. For the clothes pins I just added ribbon to a plain clothes pin I got from the dollar store.

And that is it. This is a very fun project that is easy to do and I loved using what I had on hand. I can’t wait for the auction and hopefully they will make a lot of money for their cause!

Monogram Wood Burn Coasters

Hello Everyone!

Before I get into my DIY I just wanted to let you know that there will be some updates coming to the blog. The design will be getting an overhaul. All the same content will be here, hopefully it will be easier to find and navigate to.

I am excited for the updates, and I will keep you posted on the progress.

Last week I told you guys about my cousin getting married (I made a clutch to go with my shoes. You can see that post here) The wedding was beautiful! I am so happy for them.

I wanted to give them something special for their wedding so I decided to try out my wood burning tool. (I have had it for a while, just never used it)

I thought coasters would be good for the newly weds, and a monogram of their last name would be perfect.

Materials:

~ wood ( You can use scraps you have around, or pick some up at a store. I found mine at Michaels)

~ Wood burn tool

~ graphite paper

~ print out of what you want to wood burn (I just created my monogram in word and printed it on my computer)

~ Stain (I used a pre stain because of the nature of the soft wood I was using, then I used a natural stain, and finished with a clear coat)

~sandpaper and foam paint brushed

~ Felt or cork for the back

Instructions:

First you lightly sand the wood to make sure it is nice and smooth.

Then you transfer the design onto the wood. I traced the design with a pencil using graphite paper. This worked really well.

Then I stared to outline the monogram with the wood burn tool.

This was my first attempt at making something with the wood burn tool and I learned to go at a steady pace with even pressure.

Also be very careful, the tool is HOT. I even have the band aid to prove how hot the tool can get Smile

Once it was completed and I was happy with the design I pretreated the wood with a Pre-Stain. Then I followed up with a natural stain and finished with a clear coat. Follow the directions on the stain to get the best results.

Then I put self adhesive felt on the back, and then I was done!

This was such a fun project! It did take a little while to get the hand of wood burning, but now that I get it I have a ton of other projects that I have in mind! These are perfect gifts for everyone!

Happy New Year!

New Years Day is always a fun one for me. Not only is it a start to a new year, but it is my birthday. I find it is nice to reflect on the year that has passed, but it is fun to wonder and speculate about the upcoming year.

This blog has been so much fun and I can’t wait to see where it goes next year! You guys are the best, I thoroughly enjoy all the comments and suggestions you give me. You guys make me want to create more, you inspire me.

I have big plans for the blog this year. I want to do 2 projects a week (ambitious I know, but I think I can make it happen most of the time) and I will feature new and old products so you guys can see what I use and what is out there for your projects.

It is going to be a fun year and I am excited that you will make the journey with me.

Wake Up And Be Awesome

Wake up and be awesome is my motto. Everyday you have a choice of what you want to be and awesome is my answer. It is not always easy, but I do try.

So what better way to show my love for awesomeness than to make a wall hanging? It is fun to look at first thing in the morning and they day is always better when you start off with a smile.

Materials:

~old painting that you are willing to cover up. I found mine at Goodwill

~ paint (I am using acrylic paint that I found at the craft store)

~ Alphabet stickers, I was looking for big stickers and I found mine at Target near the poster board section

~ Rhinestone (of course I need rhinestones! I think this is a prerequisite for all my crafts Smile )

~ Glue to glue on the rhinestones (I am using Aleene’s Jewel-it glue)

~ Foam paint brush

Instructions:

~ Take your old painting and wipe clean. A damp paper towel should do the trick. I found this painting at Goodwill. It is not an actual painting but a print on canvas. The style doesn’t match my décor but the colors do. So I thought it would be perfect for this project.

~ Gather your supplies

~ I cut out the letters and laid them out to make sure everything fit.

~ Stick the letters on the canvas. Really press them down to make sure no paint seeps under the letter

~ Start painting. Cover the entire canvas. Take your time and make sure it is all covered and looks good.

~ Before the paint completely dries take the letters off and throw them away. Check for sections where the paint might have seeped under the letter and clean it up. I used a Q-tip to make the letters look crisp.

I am not sure how anyone gets anything done without a little cat help. Smile It seems like every time I start a project Starlight has to be in the middle of it. But she makes it more fun.

~ Then I started adding rhinestones. I think everything is better with a little sparkle. I just added a few to the left edge of the each letter in the word Awesome. I think it added just the right amount of sparkle.

~Hang it on you wall (mine is in our bedroom) and get ready to wake up and be Awesome!

DIY Cinderella draw string bag

Last weekend while I was at the dollar store I saw these magic towels. I had seen them before and I thought they looked neat, but I don’t like using them as actual towels. They are thin and scratchy so I have never purchased them. When I saw them this weekend my crafty, creative juices started flowing. So I bought a few or 15. Whatever. I am sure I will find uses for them.

Here are some of the awesome magic towels I picked up. So many choices! I can’t wait to get my crafting on!

For this project I thought I would decorate a plain drawstring bag. I have to say that everything is better with sparkles and Cinderella!

My son is so patient and tolerant modeling my new bag. He didn’t even protest when I asked him to model my bag. He makes my heart sing Red heart

This is pretty easy to do and you can use any magic towel to customize it to you heart’s content.

Materials:

~ magic towel (prewashed and ironed. You want to make sure it is flat and ready to use)

~ Wonder under or any iron on fusible web. ( I just used what I had on hand)

~ Fabric Paint

~ Scissors

~ rhinestones

~ Rhinestone glue. ( I used Aleene’s Jewel it)

Instructions:

1. Wash and dry and iron your magic towel. That gets it ready for its transformation.

2. Iron your drawstring bag. I got my bag at JoAnns, but I am sure you can find them just about anywhere.

3. Iron your fusible web on to the back of the towel.

4. Carefully cut out Cinderella.

5. Peel the backing off. You can see the Cinderella wording and shoe, but I decided not to use them.

6. Iron Cinderella to the bag.

7. When Cinderella is cool start going around the edge with fabric paint. I found that I had to make a thicker line than I usually do because of how thick the towel is. I wanted to make sure the towel won’t unravel and that Cinderella stayed in place.

Once that was done I had Cole try on the bag and I decided that it didn’t have enough sparkle. I am sure you surprised that I didn’t think it had enough sparkles, right?

8. I had these packets of rhinestones that I found at the dollar store that I thought would work perfectly. They are connected together in strips, which worked perfectly.

9. I laid the strips out in a pattern that I liked

10. Once I got it how I liked I glued the rhinestones down. This is to make sure the rhinestones stay on the bag.

11. let dry over night and then you are ready to rock an awesome Cinderella bag. Doesn’t Cole look great rocking the bag? He is a great sport.
