How to Start a Blank Art Journal Page

Hello Everyone!

Have you ever just looked at a blank piece of paper trying to figure out what to paint or draw.

Don’t worry this happens to all of us. When I start having trouble figuring out what to do I tend to do one of these 5 way to start a page.

Some of the pages I took pages from books and tissue paper and used a gel medium to adhere them down.

Other pages I just painted different texture and stenciled on.

The whole idea is to just start, once you start then it is easier to be creative. Even if you don’t love the final page it is still a good exercise to get the creative juices flowing.

I had a good time filming how I start a blank page. I think I will continue this series and show you how I start a page with with watercolors and markers and other art supplies.

What art supplies would you like to see me use next time when I film how I start a blank art journal page?

Sword in the Stone Art Journal Page

Hello Everyone!

I have another page for the Sisterhood of the Traveling Art Journal. This theme was a little harder for me, and really challenged me creatively, but in the end I think I found a creative way to approach this theme.

So the theme of this journal is medieval gypsy. I am not sure exactly what that means so I just went with the medieval part, specifically the legend of the Sword in the Stone.

I love this story, and this page reflect this. I created a rock out of fabric, and the background is textured with tissue paper and colored with dylusions sprays.

The best part of this page is that the sword actually goes up and down! So much fun!

I am really loving how this Sisterhood program that I am in really helps me expand my boundaries and stretch my creativity. I can’t wait to see what next month will bring!

No Sew Cat Bed

Hello Everyone!

I have a cat that thinks she is a princess, and since she is a princess she needed a pink velour bed with gold trim. And since I don’t sew, I had to create a no sew version.

Our cat rules the house, lol. And since she does this pretty pink pillow is perfect for her.

Starlight
Starlight

This pillow is easy to create. Take 2 pieces of fabric and glue them together with fabric glue. If you want trim add it now. Make sure you leave a hole so you can stuff the pillow with ploy fill.

Stuff your pillow and then glue the hole shut. That is it. Such a fun, easy way to create a new space for your pet.

No sew cat bed

I placed the bed on the trunk that Starlight sleeps on. The trunk is super hard and I thought she would appreciate the soft pillow. In true cat form she refused to pose for a picture, lol

But at least she has a new bed when she is ready to sleep on it. What other no sew projects do you work on?

Mixed Media Collage Art #1

Hello Everyone!

I have really been getting into collages. It is a fun way to explore my creative process and really stretch me creatively.

I started with a canvas board and added acrylic paint and stencils and stamps and splatters to add detail and dimension to the background.

Collage art
Collage Art- Man in Saturn

Once I was happy with the background I added the collage pieces on top. I like to find images in magazines and catalogs. You never know what can be combined to create an art piece.

To finish the piece I added details with paint pens. I think that added he detail that the piece was missing.

This was a lot of fun and I will continue to explore my collage capabilities this year.

Where do you fine images to use in your collages?

How to Create a Junk Journal

Hello Everyone!

Junk journals are all the over the internet right now! I have always loved junk journals and I want to show you how I create mine.

I use my journals to try out new products or when I go on vacation I like to take my journal and fill it with all the goodies I find along the way like tickets and postcards.

Junk Journal

These are so much to make with a vintage pattern. I add all kinds of emphrema and washi tape and bits and bobs from my studio.

For the binding I like to stitch the side, but you can use a long stapler if you want. I add a ribbon to keep it all together.

These are so much to make and I like to take mine everywhere!

If you try it out let me know how it works for you.

Paris Art Journal Page

Hello Everyone!

Sometime things just get lost. That is exactly what happened to my journal that I created for the Sisterhood of the Traveling Art Journal. Mine was lost in the mail! All that hard work gone. But we are only half way though so I created a new one and I am sending it on to the girl that did not get it.

If you are not up to speed with the Sisterhood here is a link to my very first post about it.

Paris is always a good idea.

I have been loving the journaling and the themes that everyone is coming up with. This whole journey has been amazing! And I will admit that I even liked creating a new travel theme page, lol.

And getting out my watercolors was so much fun and refreshing. I need to grab them more often.

So is this journal swapping something you might do you with your friends? You can even do a version with quilts or crochet. The ideas are endless.

Mixed Media Photo Shadow Box

Hello Everyone!

I have always love these pictures of my Grandmother and Great Aunt. They both look so beautiful, so I wanted to honor them with this mixed media shadow box.

I found these really great square trays in my stash and I thought they would be perfect as a shadow box.

Mixed Media Shadow Box

I actually created 2 shadow boxes. One was my sample and practice box and the 2nd one was the one I actually filmed. I love both and I think they will look great on my mantle.

By adding contrasting elements like metal and wood you create a really interesting design. I like the worm metals with the black and white photo, the contrast is interesting to look at.

Projects like this are a great way to use up all the little bits and bobs that are in your stash, lol. These would be great gifts or perfect to keep for yourself, lol.

Elephant Art Journal Page

Hello Everyone!

Elephants are one of my favorite animals! Such a wonderful creature! I found a photo from a National Geographic Magazine of 2 elephants and I just knew they would be perfect as a focal point for an art journal page.

I wanted to do a bright and colorful page. This is outside my norm, and it was fun to push my boundaries. I used some Prima marketing oil pastels I received in a goodie bag. I haven’t used them much, you better believe that I will be using them more in the future, lol.

In addition to the oil pastels I used some spray inks, stamps, stickers, and quotes to finish out the page.

This was such a fun page to create! I love the bright colors with the elephants painted in black, it really allows them to stand out.

Resin Frame and Flowers Mixed Media

Hello Everyone!

Today I have my first project of 2019! and it is a low buy project. So far I am off to a good start, lol (I am starting strong, let’s keep it up).

For this project I had all of the elements and flowers in my stash. It was fun to find so things I forgot I had to actually us them.

I started with a resin frame that I had in my stash. I bought it on impulse from a creative reuse center and didn’t know what I was going to do with it. So it was stored away. Until I decided to do my low buy. So I went digging for something new to play with, and I found this frame.

frame and flowers

I thought the frame looked like a fancy window so I stenciled a swing and created a little scene with flowers and sprays and just about any other mixed media element I could find.

I loved adding all the flowers, I just kept piling on until I thought the canvas would break, lol. For this project I thought “the more the merrier” and kept on adding. I love how it all turned out and the splashes I added at the end was the perfect way to finish the piece.

I am looking forward to the new projects I can create using what I own. I am sure there are some hidden jems in my art studio waiting to be found.

Craft Room Organization and Low Buy Challenge

Hello Everyone!
I am so excited to show off my clean and organized craft room/ art studio. I went through a major purge with the help of a professional organizer- Morgan. (not a sponsored video)
I love how this turned into a functional space that works for me and my needs.

Here is her contact information:
https://www.morganizewithme.com/

I have to say, I am a little embarrassed at how bad my room actually was. I had over 20 years of craft and art supplies that I needed to organize and purge! I my opinion I needed some help to keep me focused and on task. I am sure I could have done this one my own, but sometimes it is better to get outside help.

Once I buckled down, with Morgan’s help, I got it all under control. And now that it is done, I feel so good and much more creative.

Before and after

I am also doing a low buy this year. What that means to me is that I am not planning on purchasing anything new that I don’t need. This does not include staples like gel mediums and glues and things of that nature. Once a quarter I will head to the store with my list and see if there is anything I need, lol. I am trying to use up what I have and be creative with my own supplies.

I anyone interested in joining me in my low buy challenge?
