Watercolor Green Galaxy Art Journal Page

Hello Everyone!

I have really been enjoying watercolors! This art journal was an experiment with a green galaxy rather than a pink or blue one. I really like the way it turned out!

Watercoloring is so freeing and expressive! I love that you can do so much with a watercolor and you can create some really cool textures and images with watercolors.

For this galaxy I wanted to use some yellows and greens and dark grays to create this galaxy. That bright yellow in the center is so fun and exactly what I was going for

watercolor galaxy art journal

I don’t have the skills to paint a whale, lol so I used this really cute whale I had in my stash, just the perfect touch for the journal page. I used a stencil from the Dollar Tree to create a mandala effect and i think it ties it all together

The last piece to the journal page was for me to add a quote. My handwriting is not the best, lol, but I really thought this quote was perfect for the page.

I really love how this all came together! Art journaling is becoming one of my favorite activities, I love that is is the perfect place to play and experiment with new techniques and ideas!

Sailboat- a Mixed Media Fabric Canvas

Hello Everyone!

Are you ready for another Fabric Canvas? I am still loving the fabric and the process of creating a canvas with fabric.

This scene was inspired by our recent vacation to Ft Lauderdale. We saw a lot of boats on the water and they looked so peaceful and wonderful that I knew I had to create one on a canvas with fabric.

I did use a smaller canvas than normal, but I really liked how it turned out.  And I used a variety of blues for the water and sky. I wanted to create depths and dimension with just one color. There are so many blues out there it was fun to pick and choose which one to use to get the look I was going for.

I used a heavy body paint from Finnabair to paint the boat, and that added additional texture and dimension to the boat. I really enjoyed that paint and I am looking forward to using it even more.

The last details were painted on to the sky and water with regular acrylic paint and that is what the painting needed.  I didn’t add any metalic paints or sparks or glitter to this canvas. I kept it all matte and I think that was the right choice for this piece of art.

This was such a fun piece to create and it was a great way to commemorate a wonderful vacation.

Fabric Watercolor Landscape

Hello Everyone!

Sometimes an experiment turns out really cool, and this just so happens to be one of those times! I did a class at ArtVenture in January of this year that taught us how to watercolor on fabric. Not quite like this example, but it got my creative juices flowing! I really wanted to explore this method and develop my own technique, and this is what I came up with- A Fabric Watercolor Landscape (actually the ocean, and it is abstract…. lol)

As always the video goes over all the steps, and it is a good companion to the blog post.

To start prep your canvas by painting it a light color, I used a slightly off white and painted the top and sides.

you will need a light gauzy fabric for the base layer. I had some in my stash, so use what you have, as long as it is a very light fabric. Take a Heavy gel and spread that all over the canvas, then coat each strip of fabric with a gloss gel. (this is the same procedure that I use on all my canvases) Once the strip is coated adhere it to the canvas. Add as many wrinkles as you want and create the texture you are going for. (I have to say I really like this stage, in fact I almost stopped here because it is so pretty, an all white fabric canvas. I might have to make one and just leave it as is. Some thing to think about, lol)

watercolor fabric landscape

Once you are done with the fabric, let is step dry. I usually leave it over night just to make sure.

After it is dry it is time to start watercoloring! gently spray the canvas with water (this allows the watercolors to move freely on the canvas) and then start watercoloring! Slowly add colors and see where they go and blend to create new looks. You can dry in between layers if you want and just keep building until you get the look you are going for. I wanted to create a sunset on the water, it is a little abstract, but that is ok, I really like how it turned out.

watercolor fabric landscape

Once the watercolors are dry you can start adding in texture. I added some iridescent micro bead to add some more shimmer and shine to the water. Just apply some gloss gel and pour on some beads. Let it dry over night before removing the excess beads.

watercolor fabric landscape

Once the beads are dry you can add even more shimmer and shine by adding Metallic watercolors. I thought this would be the perfect way to add some more details. It is a little hard to see in the photos, but up close the metallic really added that perfect final touch.

Let everything dry completely and then spray it with a spray protector.

I really like how this turned out and I can’t wait to try this technique on another canvas! What should I try to watercolor next? I love experiementing with my supplies and I would love suggestions on what to do next!

Craft Goodies Haul and Art Journal Page

Hello Everyone!

I know it is cliche, but can you believe how fast the year is going? I have a few videos that I would like to share with you, and if you want to stay up on my latest videos don’t forget to subscribe to my You Tube Channel: Take Time To Create. I recently posted a video on my craft goodies haul and an art journal page that I thought you might enjoy.

I haven’t been shopping too much lately for craft goodies, I am trying to use up what I have. I know, an impossible task, lol. But I did get some really cool goodies from my Finnabair weekend and so I made a video showing what I got.

I am in love with the Impasto Paints and I can’t wait to do even more playing with them. I also got some cool waxes and metallique paints.

The other video is an art journal page I created. I used the new art journal I altered in Finnabair’s class, it was so much fun getting back into journaling!

I was so in the zone of creating that I forgot to take pictures of my process, but I do have some up close pictures of the finished page and the video will take you through the process and show you the techniques that I did. I am happy with how it turned out!

Check out the video for all the step by step instructions and details.

So much fun creating and discovering new products and seeing what they can do.

I there a particular technique or product you would like me to demonstrate?

Weekend Mixed Media Classes with Finnabair

Hello Everyone!

A couple of weekends ago I had the most magical, special weekend! I was able to take 4 mixed media classes from the amazing Finnabair! She is so wonderful and sweet and patient, and I learned a ton from her!

I did a try to keep my squeals and fan girling to a minimum, but I am not sure I succeeded, lol. It was just so awesome!

See here we are, bffs now, lol.

I am only kidding, but just a little bit. It was so nice to spend the time with her at Mojito Creek, a retreat in Colorado. I have been there before, and I love it there! You can read my review on the retreat here: Mojito Creek Review Link

You can check out Finnabair here: Finnabair’s website

And you can check out Mojito Creek here: Mojito Creek’s website

I did a video of the projects we completed and you can see that here:

At the end of this post I will add affiliate links to some of the supplies we used, but there was just too many to list all of them.

The first project we did is the Book of Rust. I loved learning more about the rust paste and how to use it and just to get better with it. I am going to incorporate more rust into my projects because I love the look of rusty old things.

The next project is the long skinny canvas with rust paste and patina. I loved learning about how to use the patina, I have the paint at home but I never use it. Now I know what it can do and I am excited to add this medium to my projects!

That wrapped up the classes for Friday. It was a long day full of learning and exploring and I was ready for bed that night! The next day we got up not too early and started our day learning how to do 2 more projects.

The first one was the journal. This picture is the cover we made, I don’t have a pic of it reassembled. But it did go back together nicely, lol. I love this journal and I have been using it to make art journal pages, which is so nice because I have missed making art journal pages.

The last project is the moonlight one. I have to say this is the one I was most excited to learn! I love the technique and the final canvas is just so pretty.

All of these projects were so much fun to make! And I actually finished all the projects while I was at Mojito Creek, so that was nice to actually come home with finished projects! If she comes to Colorado again I will be sure to sign up for her classes! This a dream come true and I can wait to incorporate what I learned into my projects!

Here is the list of some of the products I used (they are all affiliate links)

Easy Fabric Frame DIY

Hello Everyone!

Today I have a fun, easy fabric frame project for you. I am still on a fabric kick, I have so many ideas using fabric and I can’t wait to share them with you.

For this project I used fabric I got from Annie’s Fabric Club. This is not sponsored, but I really like the fabric I got, and I am looking forward to next month’s fabric.  Here is the link to the club if you are interested in joining: https://www.creativequiltersfabricclub.com/

This is such a fun, easy project that only takes a few materials

Materials (with affiliate links):

Instructions:

Gather all your material including the fabric and your frame. The frame should have a wide enough border that gives you plenty of room to add fabric. The color of the frame doesn’t matter a lot because you will be covering it in fabric.

To get started cut your fabric in strips that are a little wider than your frame. Spread heavy gloss gel on the frame. Coat your fabric strip in Gloss gel and add to frame, crinkling it up as you go. While everything is wet take the time to get all the wrinkles and texture you are wanting.

Fabric Frame

Take your time and make sure it looks like what you are going for. Before you let your frame dry clean up the edges and back with a baby wipe. Let the frame dry. Once dry you can leave it at this step if you want, or you can go on to the next step which is adding paint.

Fabric Frame

After the fabric dried (leaving it over night is best) I dry brushed on a Finnabair Metallique and a Finnabair Sparks paint to add some detail and sparkle. I really love her paints and they add that bit of interest that I am looking for. .

And that is it, the frame is done! These are so much fun and easy to make, I think I will be making a lot more as gifts this year.

Investigative Art Journal- Tube Watercolor to pans

Hello Everyone!

It has been a while since I posted. I have an Investigative Art Journal for you today. Today we are seeing how many half pans can you get from one tube of watercolors.

For this experiment I used Reeves Watercolors that I picked up at Michael’s. The affiliate link is listed here:

watercolor tube

I found this a very interesting experiment, how much is actually in a watercolor tube? I was pleasantly surprised.

There are four and half, half pans in a tube!

watercolor tube

This is a great if you want to invest in higher quality watercolors, but you don’t think you can go through that many pans, so sharing with a friend or 2 is now a viable option.

There is plenty of product to go around to everyone!

Check out the video to see more on the experiment and there are links to my other Investigative Art Journals.

What other experiments do you want me to do with watercolors?

Easy DIY Thank You Cards

Hello Everyone!

Thank you cards are something we all need to have and these easy DIY cards are perfect for almost any occasion. And since I am obsessed with watercolors, these are right up my alley 🙂

These would be great gifts for new homeowners, newly weds, or graduates.

  • Van Gogh Water Colors: http://amzn.to/2GaSfRs
  • Dylusions Ink: http://amzn.to/2suEniH
  • Washi Tape
  • Thank you stamp

Instructions:

This first card is super easy and looks really cute. All you do is spritz the watercolor card with water and then lightly spray 2 different Dylusions ink sprays.  Move the card to blend the colors in the middle, then add some washi tape at the bottom and stamp Thank You in the middle and you are done! Quick and easy and they look great!

Watercolor thank you cards

This next card is also super fun and easy to make. Which is great because you can make a lot of them ahead of time and have them ready! For this one take a wet paint brush and paint with water in a blob type shape. Then add some watercolors into the blob, you can mix the 2 in the middle and blend them together. Add splashes and a stamped Thank You to the middle and some washi tape on the bottom. Now you have another Thank you card for your stash.

Watercolor thank you cards

This last card takes a little longer, but it is worth it. All you do is watercolor the sky, starting with the lightest color and work your way darker.  Blend carefully, you don’t want to create mud.  Once the sky is dry it is time to paint the mountains. I just used black acrylic paint to make the mountains and then I lightly drew in the trees with the same paint. Now you have a cute sunset card that is perfect for all occasions.

Beach Landscape with Fabric- Mixed Media Canvas

Hello Everyone!

Fabric Beach Landscape Mixed Media Canvas

Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together? Recently I went to Hawaii with my family and I went to Quilt and Fabric land and I picked up a pile of fat quarters (with complete honesty, I don’t sew but I do glue things onto canvases, lol) I knew I wanted to make a beach landscape mixed media canvas. I am so thrilled with how it turned out, just how I imagined it!

You can see the video here in case you need more in depth instructions:

Materials:

Affiliate links to products I used (or similar)

Instructions:

Use any sized canvas you want, I used a 20×20 and painted the edges with black acrylic paint.

Fabric Beach Landscape Mixed Media Canvas

First cut your fabric into strips then plan out what you want you canvas to look like. I wanted a beach landscape with a sun set, so I used a lot of blues for the sky, turquoise for the water, tans for the beach, and yellow, reds, and oranges for the sun. This will give you a rough idea of what it will look like, but things will move and shift and you will change your mind throughout the process, which is perfectly fine.

Fabric Beach Landscape Mixed Media Canvas

Now, we need to adhere everything down. So I took a heavy gloss gel (modeling paste would work as well) and spread a thin layer on to the canvas. Then I dipped a strip of fabric into the soft gloss gel and soaked the fabric (make sure you ring it out out) then I crinkled it up and put it on the canvas.  I wanted to to stay in place and this seemed to work great.

Fabric Beach Landscape Mixed Media Canvas

I started with the sun, which was my focal point and then I built the scenery up from there. This does take a while, but be patient and take breaks if needed. Then let it dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Fabric Beach Landscape Mixed Media Canvas

Once it was all dry I adhered sea shells on to the fabric with the heavy gel. I wanted to add more texture and interest to the canvas.

Then I dry brushed on different paints in metallic and sparks colors to add even more detail.

I love how this turned out and I can’t wait to create more landscapes with fabric!

Investigative Art Journal You Tube Series

Hello everyone!

I you all had a wonderful holiday. I relaxed and had a great time off, but now it is time to get back to work, lol.

As many of  you know I have a You Tube Channel where I feature a lot of the projects that I do right here on the blog, but I do have a series that I haven’t mentioned here. This new series I started is called Investigative Art Journal this is where I take art and craft supplies and I weight them, test them, and destroy them to learn things and to see how much product is there.

Craft supplies can be really expensive and was curious as to how much product is actually in a tube.  I am hoping that these video will help you with your purchasing decisions.

In my first video I checked out Faber-Castell Gelatos:

This was so much fun and eye opening! There was a surprising amount of product in that little Gelato.  It makes me feel a little better about buying all the colors, lol. But now I need to use them all, but that might take a million years, lol.

I have created a few videos, but the one that surprised me the most is the Stickles:

When I thought I was done, when I couldn’t squeeze out another drop I cut it open and I was surprised to see how much was left! You won’t believe it when you see the video. So make sure you cut open the bottle when you think  you are done.

Here is a link to my playlist so you can check out all my videos:

I would love for you to check out my channel and subscribe.

This has been a super fun project and I have a ton of other products I am going to test this year.

Is there anything you would like me to test and check out? Leave me your suggestions below and I will see what I can do.
